One of the pinnacles of my career was playing at The Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar in West Des Moines, Iowa. The venue may be gone now, but the memories? They’re eternal.
For almost six years straight, I played there two weeks a month, every New Year’s weekend, like I was living there part-time. And in a lot of ways, I was.
🍻 Letting Loose & Lighting It Up
Thursday nights were wild. After the show? We’d hit Shotgun Betty’s or Tonic in the West Glen Town Center to celebrate before going back at it Friday and Saturday.
The shows? 🔥
7 PM to 2 AM.
Wall-to-wall requests.
People dancing on the floor and screaming from the mezzanine.
Fight song battles between Nebraska, Iowa, and Iowa State.

One of the best gifts from that time is my friendship with PJ Gartrell—the Entertainment Director from Blue Moon. Today, he’s not only still with us—he’s our Regional Director for Iowa, Omaha, and Missouri, and my partner in our national touring show, The Big Ivory Ticklers.
The talent that passed through that room? Legendary.
But the people of Des Moines? Unmatched.
